Obviously, the opening should be slightly larger than the size of door required to ensure the door fits and doesn’t overlap. This is most important if the door is made from wood which can expand and contract in certain weather conditions. If the door is made from prefabricated plastic, it will essentially come pre-made to fit the opening exactly if it is a standard size. If it is a non-standard size, a specialist door manufacturer and fitter may be required.
Check your opening measurements against the list of standard sizes for mobile home doors. The most popular size used in mobile homes is 32 inches by 76 inches . Older homes constructed prior to 1980 can have slightly smaller doors with a height of 72 inches . Either of these door sizes are still incredibly common and can be found at most builders’ merchants, DIY stores, and mobile home specialists. The easiest way to measure for your new combo door is to go outside and measure the storm door itself, do not include the frame in this measurement. You will then add 2" to the width of the door and 1" to the height of the door.
Taking Measurements
Ideally you would measure the opening the door unit was going into both width and height making note if your walls are 4" deep or 6". That said, if you have a door already installed you cannot do this so we have two options to still obtain a good measurement. The first one you will go outside and close your front door. Facing the closed screen or storm door make a note as to what side your knob is on and the hinges.
Then, measure the height by running your tape measure along your door from the top corner to the bottom corner. To find the thickness of your door, measure the door jam or hold your tape measure across the inner edge of the door and record the number. In case it’s not a perfect rectangle, take these measurements from a few different spots on the door to verify your numbers.
